Commemorating World Mangrove Day, FMIPA UI Community Service Team Holds Community Literacy and Mangrove Planting Program in Lampung
August 9, 2024
One of the areas in Indonesia that has experienced mangrove forest damage is Pahawang Island, Pesawaran, Lampung. This island is a popular marine tourism destination with tourism potential such as white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and diverse marine biota. Unfortunately, the natural beauty of Pahawang Island is threatened by climate change and abrasion which causes a decline in environmental quality. This condition then worsens due to anthropogenic activities such as illegal logging of mangrove forests, waste disposal, and development cottage to support developing tourism activities.
With this background, and in order to commemorate World Mangrove Day, the community service team (pengmas) from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) consisting of lecturers and students implemented the POLIMER Program (Community Literacy and Mangrove Planting Program as a Nature Based Solution)., in Pahawang Village, on Monday, July 22, 2024.
In Pahawang Village, a team consisting of Dr. Tito Latif Indra as Field Supervisor, Muhammad Attorik Falnsky, S.Si and Bintang Mahakarya Sembahen, S.Si as assistant lecturers together with a team of students from the Department of Geography, namely Satrio Rifqi Wicaksono, Azzikri, Ramaditya Dhamara Mukri, Damar Daffa Aulia, Ero Alvaro, Muhammad Haikal Mudzaki and Fajar Ramadhan together with Sthevi Fahdira from the Department of Biology presented Nature based Solution (NbS) as a strategic step in mitigating climate change in Pulau Pahawang Village. In this context, NbS can be realized through planting mangroves to protect the coast from abrasion and preserve biodiversity, as well as increasing community involvement and awareness in conservation efforts.
"implementation Nature Based Solution can be a strategic step in mitigating climate change and abrasion on Pahawang Island. Through this activity, it is hoped that students can practice the knowledge they have gained in class to be useful for society and the environment. As we all know, currently mangroves are one of the components blue carbon ecosystem has an important role in the carbon cycle through its high carbon absorption capacity and can also protect coastal areas from abrasion phenomena," said the head of the community service team, Dr. Tito Latif Indra.
Pahawang Village Secretary Mr. Aristama expressed his appreciation to the team for this activity. In his speech, he said, "The planting program mangrove This is no longer foreign to Pahawang Village, and is very important for the sustainability of forest conservation. mangrove mangroves in Pahawang Village. We still need a lot of plant cultivation activities mangrove in order to protect Pahawang Island from the threat of abrasion. With the support of the FMIPA UI community service team through this activity, hopefully it will encourage Pahawang Island to become a successful example in terms of sustainable mangrove ecosystem management, and provide long-term benefits for the environment and local communities."
The team started the community literacy activities with a presentation on Nature-based Solution (NbS) delivered by Muhammad Attorik Falensky, S.Si and Ero Alvaro. He explained that Nature-based Solution is a solution inspired by nature, and utilizes natural resources to address social environmental issues.
This was continued by Ero Alvaro, who said that in accordance with the conditions of Pahawang Island, which is one of the areas in Indonesia that has experienced forest damage. mangrove due to forest over-exploitation (Davinsy, et al. 2015). Referring to the research of Irsadi et al. (2022) which shows that abrasion and rising sea levels have resulted in a decrease in the availability of fresh water, damage to strategic coastal infrastructure and loss of coastlines. In addition, climate change and environmental damage also have a negative impact on the social and economic life of the Pahawang Island community and threaten the developing Pahawang tourism.
After the presentation, the community literacy activity ended with a question and answer session with residents of Pahawang Village regarding forest planting solutions. mangrove. On the same occasion, the community service team together with the Pahawang Village community visited the planting location. mangrove which had previously been discussed together. There, they planted seeds mangrove as many as 50 pieces. The location chosen for planting activities is in tidal areas that are not too submerged in water during high tide and not too dry during low tide with a muddy sand substrate. The equipment used in planting is bamboo stakes and ropes.
Through this Community Literacy and Mangrove Planting Program, it is hoped that public awareness of the importance of the mangrove ecosystem, especially in efforts to overcome climate change and prevent coastal abrasion, can continue to increase significantly. In addition, this activity is also expected to improve the quality and sustainability of the mangrove forest ecosystem on Pahawang Island, by not only preventing the decline in the area of mangrove forests, but also actively repairing areas that have been damaged.
