Commemorating World Environment Day, Geography FMIPA UI Holds Clean-up Action Around Lake Puspa UI

June 7, 2023

World Environment Day, which is celebrated every June 5, is an important moment to raise global public awareness of the need to protect, preserve, and maintain the environment. In order to welcome this moment, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) through a number of students who are members of the UI Geography Department Student Association (HMD) held a clean-up action around Lake Puspa UI, Thursday, June 1, 2023.

The purpose of this activity is to educate UI residents and surrounding areas about the negative impacts of plastic waste on the environment, as well as to invite them to reduce the use of single-use plastic.

This activity involved 21 students and HMD Geography UI functionaries. Not only cleaning up the trash around the lake, they also released 20 goldfish seeds and 10 catfish seeds as an effort to increase biodiversity and the sustainability of the aquatic ecosystem around Lake Puspa UI.

The action took place from morning until 17.00 WIB. Although the activity was hampered by drizzle, the activity still ran smoothly. This was revealed by Feka Rahmad Hidayah as the person in charge of the activity

"That day we were a little hampered by the drizzle, but thank God we were still happy and grateful because the event went smoothly," said Feka, who is steering committee and also the Head of the Social and Environmental Department of HMD Geography UI to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

Hopefully this activity can inspire UI residents and the surrounding area to always maintain environmental sustainability," added Feka.

In this case, Feka is tasked with supervising and being responsible for the sustainability of the activity. He is assisted by his colleagues Azizah Azzahra and Maura as the Chairperson of the Executive Committee. Feka also said that the action activity had been designed since the beginning of the formation of the 2023 UI Geography HMD management as part of the work program, but was refined again about a week before the activity took place.

n the theme of World Environment Day which carries a solution to the problem of plastic waste with the campaign tagline #BeatPlasticPollution, HMD Geography UI is committed to contributing to overcoming this problem.

Every individual has an important role as an agent of environmental change, and collective efforts are needed involving organizations, institutions, communities, and governments to jointly encourage community participation to participate as agents of change in maintaining environmental sustainability.

"We believe that with cooperation and shared awareness, we can create positive changes in maintaining the sustainability of nature and provide a good legacy for future generations," said Feka.

The action held by HMD Geography UI is also real evidence that students also have an important role in building awareness, as well as mobilizing the community to maintain environmental sustainability. Through concrete actions such as clean-up actions and educational campaigns, they have become agents of change that inspire the community to always love the environment by maintaining its sustainability.
