UI Geography Students Become National Best Presenters

January 27, 2022

Husnul Ermalena, a 2018 undergraduate student in Geography, brought honor to FMIPA UI by winning the award for Best Presenter 1 at the National Seminar organized by the Department of Geography Education, FKIP, Halu Oleo University thanks to her research entitled "Place Sensitivity in Gunung Padang Hamlet to Historical Tourism of the Gunung Padang Site".

Seminar with the theme "Geographic Challenges in the Era Society 5.0” was held on November 6, 2021, which was held online (by participants) and offline (by the committee).

There are six sub-themes given, namely geography education, remote sensing, regional development and planning, tourism, disaster mitigation, and agricultural geography. On his occasion, Husnul chose the theme of tourism, this he adjusted to the results of his latest research findings in one of the courses, namely Field Work Lecture 3.

"The research was conducted with the aim of analyzing the sensitivity of the Gunung Padang Hamlet to the historical tourist site of the Gunung Padang Site," said Husnul to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

The main idea of the research, said Husnul, was motivated by the fact that the place is a megalith site that is included in the national cultural heritage. This is also supported by the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 023/M/2014 on the determination of the Gunung Padang Site as a National Cultural Heritage.

According to him, the decision has changed the sensitivity of the residents of Gunung Padang Hamlet to make the Gunung Padang Site a historical tourist site.

To complete his paper, he collected data through in-depth interviews with informants and the community around the Gunung Padang Site and observations in the Gunung Padang Hamlet. Interview questions focused on aspects of tourist attractions, culture, accessibility, amenities (facilities), and the community's economy.

From the results of his research, he concluded that since the Gunung Padang Site was made a National Cultural Heritage, the Gunung Padang Hamlet changed their sense of place to support the Gunung Padang Site tourist attraction.

In geography, place sensitivity (sense of place) can be interpreted as a human perception of the characteristics of the environment in which they live. With the ministerial decision mentioned earlier, it has a positive impact because it makes the community help maintain the megalithic site to avoid damage.

Talking about challenges, Husnul revealed that his biggest challenge was when he had to complete his paper in a very short time.

“Actually, I only found out about the seminar on the day itself. deadline which was on November 4, but fortunately the committee gave an extension until the next day. I actually did the data processing in just one night. So, it can be said (the work) was very fast because the next day was also the peak of the seminar and the presentation of the speakers in the afternoon," said Husnul, telling about his challenges.

On the day of the peak event of the seminar, Husnul not only presented his research, but there was also a discussion session with the judges with a total time of 15 minutes. The presentation of the speakers was carried out in turns by all student participants from all over Indonesia.

Husnul said that with this experience, he had gained many benefits.

"In my opinion, the benefits are numerous. I am learning more to write journals correctly, practicing time discipline, gaining experience, increasing self-confidence, and also increasing relationships," said Husnul.

Closing the interview session with the FMIPA UI Public Relations Team, Husnul advised all FMIPA UI students not to miss the opportunity because he believes that opportunities do not come twice. As with taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in competitions where the most important thing we can get is valuable experience.
