Students of the Department of Geography, FMIPA UI Conduct Research on Rambut Island

May 14, 2018

As is commonly known, being a student at FMIPA UI cannot be separated from field practical activities for most of the existing departments, such as geophysics, geology, geography, and biology.

The benefits of field practicum activities themselves are certainly very large for the sustainability of existing learning. By conducting field practicums, students can directly find out the objects they are studying.

To research and study the flora and fauna in Indonesia, a forum is needed that can be a source of media for learning and conducting observations.

And on May 10, 2018, students of the Geography Undergraduate Study Program (Prodi) FMIPA UI chose the Seribu Islands, especially Rambut Island as the location for field practicum activities. This activity was carried out in order to fulfill the value of the biogeography course.

Biogeography is a combined science between biology and geography that studies biodiversity based on space and time. This is of course also related to the distribution of biodiversity.

Rambut Island is known as the Bird Kingdom Island because of the many birds on the island. In addition to the birds on the island, there are also several types of plants, such as Api-api, Mangrove, Acacia, Ki Hujan, Mahogany, Flamboyan, Ki Tower, and Duri Busyetan. While the types of birds found on this island include the Little Egret, the Little Blue Kingfisher and other types of birds.

While at the location, students were assigned to go around Rambut Island while observing the surrounding nature. The objects of observation include surrounding plants such as mangroves which are useful for reducing abrasion, seabirds that make nests for breeding.

In addition, the geography students of FMIPA UI conducted land boundary mapping of the island. This is important to do as geography students of FMIPA UI.

After conducting observation activities, the students also carried out cleaning activities around Rambut Island to reduce the amount of garbage on the island.
