October 10, 2018

The Department of Geography, FMIPA UI, supported by PT Esri Indonesia and the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) held a Geography Days event entitled "Today's Geography" on Wednesday (10/10) at the Apung Room, UI Depok.

The event, which will last until Saturday (13/10), is packed with a series of activities, including a national geography seminar aimed at developing the talents of geography department students, as well as a national geography olympiad for high school students and also university students to help develop the interests and potential of students, there are also workshops and tourist attractions.

Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris as the dean, officially opened the event. In his speech, he thanked BIG and PT. Esri Indonesia who have fully supported this activity, he also appreciated the Geography Department Student Association (HMD) who have organized this activity well.

Haris said that this activity is important because it is part of FMIPA UI's efforts to ground geography in the wider community. He said that the scope of learning the discipline of geography is relatively broad. Geography studies everything on the surface of the earth and the factors that influence it, both physical, social, and technical aspects.

However, Haris continued, there are still many people who do not know the scope of this geographical science. Sometimes the discipline of geography is looked down upon as a science that only requires memorization skills, even though geography is a complex and applicable science.

"Many people still do not know about pure geography and its job prospects. People assume that all geography graduates in higher education will only become teachers," said Haris.

In line with Haris, Dr. Supriatna M.T. Head of the Department of Geography explained that the job prospects for geography graduates are very broad and promising. This is because geography plays a very important role in the planning, development and policy-making process in the development process in Indonesia.

we are here as influencer for the Indonesian people who have a mission to straighten out and change the mindset about the importance of geography in facing the era of information society and this era of development," he said.

It hopes through a series of events Geography Days 10th FMIPA UI can introduce the discipline of geography as one step to change the way society views this geographical science.

"Hopefully, all levels of Indonesian society can get to know each other better, be closer, and understand more about this discipline," he added.

Also present at this event were the heads of the FMIPA UI departments, Dr. Achmad Istamar as CEO of PT. ESRI Indonesia, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Hasanuddin Zainal Abidin, M.Sc. Eng. as the chairman of BIG.
