Supporting Disaster Management, FMIPA UI Sends Students to Sentani

March 22, 2019

Indonesia is in mourning again. Two weeks ago, precisely on Saturday (16/03) flash floods hit and devastated Sentani, the capital of Jayapura Regency, Papua. As a result of the flash flood, more than 50 people became victims, and thousands of residents were forced to evacuate to safer places.

Today (22/3), the Department of Geography, FMIPA UI, which is part of the UI Peduli team with the support of the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM), has sent two of its students, namely Abdurrahman Aslam and Muhamad Iko Kersapati to Sentani in the emergency response phase.

In this phase, both will make maximum efforts to produce the latest spatial data from recordings of the Sentani flash flood incident in the form of maps, which can be useful for operational purposes in the field.

This map can also show regional zones with their level of vulnerability to possible natural disasters.

For the next few days until Tuesday (3/26), they will carry out tasks related to regional mapping, including collecting regional data, assessing damage and the impact of the disaster. In addition, they also carry out social actions in Sentani.
