Department of Geography FMIPA UI Holds Mini Webinar “Climate Crisis 2.0: Start Managing to Prevent Disasters” in the Framework of The 13th Geography Days

November 29, 2021

Geographic National Society Summit (GNSS) held a second mini webinar on Sunday, November 21, 2021, or one day after the first mini webinar that was previously held. Not much different from the topic of the first mini webinar, in the Mini Webinar Climate Crisis 2.0 activity, The 13th Geography Days carrying the theme “Start Managing to Prevent Disasters”.

The webinar activity began with an opening and ice breaking by Bella Hena, as moderator. Continued with the presentation of the first material by the first resource person, Aldo Zulfahmi Putra, Head of Supply Chain di Siklus Refill Indonesia.

Presentation entitled “Plastic Waste: How to Tackle it with The “Cycle” presents material related to the increase in plastic waste during the pandemic and how plastic waste in urban environments affects climate change.

The resource person emphasized that the negative impact of plastic waste will damage the ecosystem and the community's economy. As data released by LIPI, in 2050, plastic waste is predicted to exceed the number of fish. Therefore, it is very important to reduce plastic waste, one way is to use the Refill Cycle service to refill household products.

In contrast to the second source, Syaharani, Steering Committee At Climate Break, he presented material on conditions that indicate signs of a climate emergency, the importance of a climate declaration, and gave advice to young people regarding the types of actions we can take.

"The climate crisis is a real phenomenon. Indonesia is currently experiencing a constant temperature increase of 0.3 degrees every year. We only have 8 years left to stop this (the worsening climate crisis) all," said Syaharani firmly in the middle of his presentation.

No different from the previous day's webinar activities, a question and answer session guided by the moderator was conducted after the speaker's presentation was over. The enthusiasm of the participants in asking questions made the webinar session more interactive. Before closing the activity, the moderator also allowed the speaker to provide closing statement-his.

"Most of us only become aware of environmental issues when they have already happened. Never get tired of being part of the solution to environmental problems. As the younger generation, it is only right that we actively participate and not be apathetic," said Kak Aldo.

“We have the power to ward off the climate crisis. Take preventive measures so that it does not get worse. There are many steps we can take to contribute. The easiest way we can do is by speaking up. The younger generation can encourage innovation and research that can offer solutions,” added Kak Rani.

Geographic National Society Summit (GNSS) is one of the series of events of The 13th Geography Days. This event will be held online, including two mini webinars with the theme "Climate Crisis 1.0: Oceans Damaged, World Affected” and “Climate Crisis 2.0: Start Managing to Prevent Disasters” and the main webinar with the theme “Collaborative Efforts and Innovation for Climate Crisis“. GNSS was attended by experts in their fields from various government and private institutions as a form of collaboration in dealing with the climate crisis.
