Not Vietnam, UI FMIPA Spatial Geography Expert Says RI Can Learn from This Country in Handling Corona Virus

May 19, 2020

Thursday (14/5/2020), FMIPA UI held webinar series 1. This webinar discussed various scientific perspectives on Covid-19. Participants in this webinar reached almost 300 participants consisting of various groups, ranging from students to the general public.

UI FMIPA spatial geography expert, Dr. Triarko Nurlambang discusses spatial behavior or community behavior in a space to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic in Webinar Series 1 held by FMIPA UI on Thursday (14/5/2020) online.

In his presentation, he said that a person's behavior in society can be very different in each region, for example, a society that has pluralistic characteristics like in Indonesia. Coupled with the democratic system implemented in Indonesia, it makes society not all have the same understanding in responding to a government policy, such as responding to the Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) policy as an effort to break the chain of Covid-19.

Then, Dr. Triarko also touched on the matter of Beyond New Normal which is a new and different habit that many people will do after the Covid-19 pandemic. Beyond New Normal covers 3 main things, namely Leading and WorkingDistancing Measures, dan Urban Dynamics.

In a discussion session in the form of questions and answers, one of the participants asked Dr. Triarko. The question was quite interesting, namely about which country's policies are considered suitable to be implemented in Indonesia in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Triarko answered that no country really has a policy that can be used as an example to be implemented in Indonesia or even other countries. This is due to the geographical conditions and idealism of the Indonesian state which are not the same as other countries. So it is necessary to make adjustments from various aspects and conditions of the state in making and implementing policies.

However, he said that New Zealand could be used as a learning reference for Indonesia because it has conditions that are quite 'close' to Indonesia. Although he considered that New Zealand society is more able to accept and understand its government's policies.

"But if we want to try to learn from other countries, in my opinion the closest is New Zealand. Not China, because our country is not a one-party state, and also not Vietnam. So, it is closer to New Zealand perhaps, but New Zealand society is indeed high in terms of their ability to accept and understand," explained Dr. Triarko when answering the question.

As reported detik.com (Rabu, 29/04/2020), World Health Organization (WHO), praised New Zealand's handling of the spread of the coronavirus by imposing the maximum level 4 restrictions, which only allow essential services to operate.
