The term "kamitetep" may sound unfamiliar to some, but for people in tropical regions like Indonesia, these small creatures are considered household pests. Kamitetep is the local name for small insects from the Staphylinidae family, which are often found around homes and damp areas. Although small and seemingly harmless, these insects can cause itching. Because of this, it's important to recognize the typical effects of contact with kamitetep and know how to repel them.
Typical itching due to kamitetep
Lecturer in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (UI), Dr. Dra. Ratna Yuniati, M.Sc., said that there are indeed visible signs on the skin if it comes into contact with kamitetep. "Signs on the skin if it has been exposed to kamitetep can be a rash or reddish spots that are itchy," said Dr. Ratna, Thursday (10/7/2025). She added that for some people who have sensitive skin, the signs that appear can be a mild allergic reaction, irritation, or swelling. "Usually the skin can heal on its own within 3-7 days," she continued.
Our exit time remains the same
Before learning how to get rid of kamitetep, Dr. Ratna said it's important to understand when these insects emerge. This way, homeowners can anticipate their appearance. Ratna explained that kamitetep generally appear during the rainy season or at the beginning of the rainy season.
"This is because the rainy season is humid, which supports the development of larvae and the survival of their sacs," he said. "High humidity causes dust, hair, and organic debris to accumulate more in the corners of the house, which becomes a food source for the larvae," he added. Furthermore, he added, during the rainy season, houses tend to be more enclosed, resulting in less than optimal ventilation. Poor ventilation makes the house an ideal place for weevils to thrive.
"Meanwhile, during the dry season, weevil activity can still decrease due to dry air and faster temperatures, which can inhibit larval development or cause the sacs to disappear," he added.
How to banish moths from your home. Based on the explanation above, it's known that moths are more common in Indonesia during the rainy season. Once you know when they appear, she explained that the only way to banish moths is to clean them. "Don't just clean the area where the moths are; clean the surrounding area as well," said Dr. Ratna.
He suggests sweeping and mopping the house regularly, especially in the corners of the room, under the bed, cupboards and storage areas.
"Vacuum carpets and floors to remove loose hair, dust, and dead skin flakes (food for bedbug larvae)," said Dr. Ratna. "Open the windows daily to prevent excessive humidity," she added.
He also recommends using a dehumidifier or fan if the air is too humid. Regularly cleaning the bathroom and kitchen is also important, as these two rooms are known for being damp and often neglected.
He also advised against leaving dirty clothes piled up for too long, as they could become a breeding ground for larvae. "Use mothballs or camphor. These ingredients can help repel moths that live on our skin and keep your closet or storage area fresh," he concluded.
