FMIPA UI and PT PGAS Solution Hold Biodiversity Conservation Training to Support Sustainable Energy Sector

July 15, 2025

Depok, July 15, 2025 – Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) through the Biological Products and Services Provider Section Research Center (BIOPROSPECT), Special Work Unit – Institute of Applied Sciences (UKK – LST), in collaboration with PT PGAS Solution, a subsidiary of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk., held a training entitled Conservation and Protection of Biodiversity (Kehati) which took place on July 15–17, 2025 at the UI Depok Campus

This training was attended by 13 participants who are environmental analysts from PT Pertamina Gas who come from various areas, namely West Java, East Java, Kalimantan, and Sumatra. The event was officially opened by the head of UKK – LST Mr. Eko Waludi, S.T., M.Si, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the Pertamina Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, FMIPA UI, Depok.

In his remarks, the Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dr. Tito Latif Indra, S.Si., M.Si., emphasized FMIPA UI's commitment to encouraging the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), both at the university and national levels.

"We believe that building a sustainable future requires cross-sector collaboration, inclusive knowledge transfer, and strengthening the capacity of a young generation that cares about the environment," said Prof. Tito.

He considered this training as a concrete form of the mission, especially in supporting SDGs 13 (Addressing Climate Change), SDGs 15 (Terrestrial Ecosystems), SDGs 4 (Quality Education), and SDGs 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals).

Echoing Prof. Tito, Eko Waludi stated that strengthening capacity in biodiversity conservation is key to bridging the gap between science, policy, and concrete action. Increasingly complex environmental challenges demand an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach.

"Complex environmental challenges require a collaborative approach from various parties. We hope this training will help participants apply their knowledge in real-world settings," said Eko.

The event's chief executive, Dr. Mega Atria, M.Sc., explained that during the three-day training, participants will be guided by speakers from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia. Participants will be equipped with material on basic biodiversity and conservation concepts, national and international regulations related to biodiversity protection (including the SDGs and IUCN), and an understanding of forest, coastal, and aquatic ecosystems.

In addition, the training will cover skills in identifying and monitoring flora, fauna, and critical habitats around operational areas. The latest scientific approaches will be introduced, including molecular technology, citizen science, local ecological knowledge, and ecosystem service modeling.

"The first and second days focused on theoretical training at the FMIPA UI – PT Pertamina Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, while the third day included practical work and field observations at the UI Biology Department and Urban Forest Laboratory," said Dr. Mega.

Field activities, he continued, include bird inventory, vegetation analysis, plant collection and preservation, measuring carbon emissions from soil and trees, and monitoring aquatic biodiversity.

Also present at this activity was Samuel Endrico, S.H., M.H., Department Head of Learning and Development of PT PGAS Solution, who provided full support for the initiative to strengthen human resource capacity in the field of environmental conservation.

Through this training, FMIPA UI and PT PGAS Solution hope to encourage the integration of sustainability principles in energy industry activities, as well as strengthen the role of academics and practitioners in protecting Indonesia's biodiversity.
