Science for Development: FMIPA UI’s Collaboration in the Patriot Expedition in Transmigration Areas

August 29, 2025

Several researchers from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), took part in the national program Patriot Expedition in Transmigration Areas, initiated by the Ministry of Transmigration of the Republic of Indonesia

This involvement is part of FMIPA UI’s tangible contribution to promoting the development of transmigration areas as new economic growth centers based on industrialization, downstream processing, and investment.

The FMIPA UI research team was part of the second study team, tasked with formulating short-, medium-, and long-term development strategies for the leading commodities in each transmigration site.

They also played a role in building the business ecosystem, developing community-based corporations, enhancing the institutional capacity of local economies and human resources (HR), and accelerating the downstream processing of regional flagship products.

The researchers involved came from two departments at FMIPA UI, namely Biology and Geography. From the Department of Biology, five names were recorded: Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D., Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Mufti P. Patria, Dr. Mega Atria, M.Si., Dr. Dian Hendrayanti, M.Sc., and Dr. rer. nat. Yasman.

Meanwhile, from the Department of Geography, the participants included Dr. Eko Kusratmoko, M.S., Prof. Dr. Dewi Susiloningtyas, M.Si., Dr. Hafid Setiadi, M.T., Dr. Tjiong Giok Pin, M.Si., and Iqbal Putut Ash Shidiq, M.Sc., Ph.D.

The interdisciplinary collaboration also involved a lecturer from the Faculty of Economics and Business UI, Rr. Ratih Dyah Kusumastuti, Ph.D.

The Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., stated that the participation of the academic community in this program represents a contribution of scientific knowledge in supporting the transformation of transmigration areas.

“We are confident that a research- and data-based approach is key to designing regional development that is inclusive, sustainable, and aligned with local potential,” he said.

He added that the presence of academics in the field is expected to provide tangible benefits to the community and serve as a basis for formulating more evidence-based national development policies. (evidence-based policy). (evidence-based policy).

The Patriot Expedition began on August 13 and will continue until December 12, 2025. UI sent a total of 285 participants, consisting of 57 team leaders, 108 alumni, and 120 students. They will be deployed to 37 transmigration sites across Indonesia.

Before being deployed to the field, all participants attended a briefing session on August 24–25, 2025, at Balai Kartini, Jakarta, which also featured several Ministerial Lectures delivered by senior government officials.

The transmigration areas serving as expedition sites have diverse economic potential, ranging from agriculture, plantations, and fisheries to processing industries. The government targets this program as a strategic step in establishing new economic centers integrated with national development

Prof. Anom Bowolaksono, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of a scientific approach in the implementation of this program.

“With robust research and interdisciplinary collaboration, we can ensure that regional development proceeds sustainably and truly empowers local communities,” said Prof. Anom

The Patriot Expedition program is a strategic agenda of the Ministry of Transmigration, involving students, alumni, researchers, and professionals from various fields. This initiative aims to map the economic potential of 154 transmigration areas across Indonesia and to create development models based on science, innovation, and community empowerment as the foundation for regional economic growth.
