Sustainable development is a long-term development concept. In this concept, development must meet current needs (short term), but without sacrificing the fulfillment of the needs of future generations.
However, this development concept is rarely applied in Indonesia. Social and environmental aspects, in the concept of development in Indonesia are less considered, causing many losses experienced by the country. Lack of clean water for agriculture because water sources are polluted by industrial waste, drought and flood disasters are the impacts of development that does not prioritize the concept of sustainability.
Geography, as a science that studies the physical and non-physical aspects of a region, offers a fairly holistic development tool. With the use of geography, development becomes integrated between physical management and human management in it.
The results of geographical studies such as rock characteristics, plant characteristics, climate characteristics, and community behavior in an area, using geographical analysis methods, can be used as a reference for making local government regulatory policies.
Dr.rer.nat. Abdul Haris as Dean of FMIPA UI, in his speech said that Geography plays a role in forming a holistic development concept that prioritizes the integration of all aspects, both physical and non-physical. "With the increasing awareness of the use of geography in the development process, it is hoped that development in Indonesia will not only pay attention to the economic development side, but also consider the environmental and social impacts of a development process," he said.
