4 FMIPA UI Study Programs Achieve International Accreditation, Dean: This is Our Commitment to Improving the Quality of Continuing Education

October 6, 2022

A total of four Study Programs (Prodi) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) have successfully achieved international accreditation from Akkreditierungsagentur fur Studiengange der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik (ASIIN), an independent institution based in Germany for quality assurance of a degree program in the disciplines of Engineering, informatics, natural sciences, and mathematics. The four study programs are S1 Mathematics, S1 Physics, S1 Biology, and S1 Geography. The four study programs were accredited by ASIIN starting from June 14, 2022 to October 15, 2023.

Head of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit of FMIPA UI Dr. Denny R. Silaban, M.Kom. explained the long process and challenges that FMIPA UI had to go through in order to obtain the ASIIN certificate.

According to him, the ASIIN accreditation plan for the 4 Undergraduate Study Programs had begun in January 2021 in a leadership working meeting. Then in February 2021, the leadership formed the faculty ASIIN team and each study program team, the team then started working in March and made a joint Self Assessment Report (SAR).

The Covid-19 pandemic situation which required the team to work from their respective places was a challenge in itself. Moreover, said Dr. Denny, several team members had also been exposed to Covid-19 which resulted in the initial SAR being delayed for 3 weeks from the original plan.

"It turned out that the four study programs were made into 1 cluster so that 1 joint SAR (Self Assessment Report) had to be made. This was a challenge in itself, because the Faculty team and the four study program teams had to work together and coordinate intensively in pandemic conditions so that all activities were carried out online. Several team members had also been exposed to Covid-19 so that the Initial SAR was delayed by about 3 weeks from the initial plan in August, only realized at the end of August 2021," said Dr. Denny explaining to the FMIPA UI Public Relations team.

The ASIIN visitation itself was carried out at the end of February 2022. The ongoing pandemic situation forced the visitation to be carried out online. Visitation activities to various laboratories were also carried out virtually by displaying content about laboratory facilities and infrastructure as a whole in video format that had previously been made by the team.

ASIIN is an independent institution based in Germany for quality assurance of a degree program in the disciplines of Engineering, Informatics, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics. Since 2000, ASIIN has had the right to provide an accreditation stamp from the German Accreditation Council, in addition to the ASIIN quality stamp. ASIIN is registered in the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) until August 31, 2026. EQAR is included in the list of accreditation registers recognized by the Indonesian government.

Dean of FMIPA UI Dede Djuhana, Ph.D. said "With the accreditation of these study programs, overall FMIPA UI currently has 5 internationally accredited study programs, including the S1 Chemistry study program by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)."

In fact, said the Dean, preparations are currently underway for an online visitation for RSC international accreditation for the S2 Chemistry Study Program which is planned to be carried out in early November 2022.

In addition, 3 FMIPA UI Postgraduate Study Programs, namely the Masters of Physics, Masters of Materials Science, and Masters of Biology, are also in preparation for ASIIN accreditation.

The Dean added that this international accreditation achievement also proves that FMIPA UI is able to increase the Main Performance Indicator (IKU) point 8, namely the number of international standard study programs.

He emphasized that the purpose of obtaining ASIIN accreditation is not merely to obtain a certificate, but as a commitment of FMIPA UI in improving the quality of sustainable education, and strengthening FMIPA UI's competitiveness at the international level.

"After getting a certificate does not mean that our hard work is over, but instead we must maintain our commitment to continue to improve the quality of education sustainably," he said.

For this achievement, the Dean appreciated his staff and the academic community of FMIPA UI who had worked hard to complete all the long processes to obtain this accreditation.

He encouraged all study programs that have received international accreditation to actively establish international cooperation in the field of education through double degree programs, in bound, out bound, and so on. double degree, in bound, out bound, dan sebagainya.
