Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures, and General Administration and lecturer at the Department of Geography, FMIPA UI, Dr. Tito Latif Indra, M.Sc., in his remarks said that the inauguration of the geographer profession is in line with UI's performance achievement targets in the Main Performance Indicators of Higher Education, namely lecturers with competency/professional certification recognized by industry and the world of work, or from professional practitioners, the world of industry, or the world of work.
"The University of Indonesia has a target of lecturers with competency qualifications and professional certification," said Dr. Tito.
Dr. Tito hopes that the newly inaugurated First Indonesian Geographers, especially those from FMIPA UI, can develop the Geographer profession in Indonesia, prioritizing professionalism as experts in the GI field by adhering to the rules and code of ethics of the Geographer Profession, in order to maintain the dignity of the Indonesian Geographer profession.
"Every profession, including Geographers, certainly has rules and codes of ethics that serve as guidelines so that work can be accounted for according to the professional guidelines," he said.
Government Regulation (PP) Number 45 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Geospatial Information explicitly explains the GI profession. This PP answers the practical and professional needs of the GI industry.
It is stated in the regulation that the GI profession as referred to in paragraph 21 consists of: (a) geographers; and (b) surveyors. With the implementation of this regulation, the system and governance of human resources (HR) in the GI field have a strong foundation and have been carried out continuously and sustainably.
The background to the appointment of the First Geographer is the need to prepare a geographer professional education study program that requires teaching staff with geographer qualifications, as an implementation of PP 45/2021. The 12 newly appointed First Geographers have gone through a series of selections and mechanisms by the National Selection Committee (Panselnas) for the First Geographer Professional Person which is ad hoc.
The members of the Panselnas consist of stakeholders in the IG field from elements of the agency (Geospatial Information Agency), academics (universities), and professional associations (IGI). The Panselnas is chaired by Sumaryono (BIG), with members Lalitya Narieswari (BIG); Retno Wulan (BIG); Widyawati (IGI); Prima Widayani (IGI); Agung Satriyo Nugroho (academic); Danang Sri Hadmoko (academic); Iswari Nur Hidayati (academic); Triarko Nurlambang (academic); along with the support of the secretariat led by Guridno Bintar Saputro (BIG).
The presence of the Geographer Profession is also expected to avoid professional malpractice, in order to guarantee competence and quality of work. They are also required to focus on the security and safety aspects in professional practice, as an effort to produce quality work to help society achieve prosperity in the dynamics of life.
