FMIPA UI collaborated with Leiden University for the second time to hold a Winter School program. This Winter School program raised the topic \"Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainability: Marine Chapter\". This activity was held from January 12-26, 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This program is an internationalization program for the academic field of FMIPA UI, and is part of the program Sustainable Development<\/em> (sustainable development) coordinated by Institute of Environmental Sciences <\/em>(CML), Leiden University, Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the presence of the Deputy Head of Mission \u2013 Dutch Embassy for Indonesia, Mr. Ferdinand Lahnstein, Deputy Dean of Field II of FMIPA UI, Dr. Rokhmatulloh, M.Eng. representing the Dean of FMIPA UI, officially opened the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This activity involved 12 students from the University of Indonesia and 12 students from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands who wanted to learn about the issues and challenges faced in efforts to conserve diversity and ecosystem sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After several days of activities at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (UI) in Depok, the participants will participate in a 10-day field study program, from January 16-24, 2018, on Pramuka Island, in the Seribu Islands Marine National Park. On Pramuka Island, they will visit two turtle hatcheries: West Panjaliran and East Panjaliran. There, they will conduct joint research related to the assigned sub-themes and will make a final presentation on the results of their research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To broaden the participants' knowledge, FMIPA UI presents a number of competent speakers in their fields to deliver exclusive public lectures that can provide participants with an understanding of Indonesian culture and the themes raised by this program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some of the speakers included Prof. Melani Budianta who presented the material \u201cUnderstanding Indonesian Culture: Unity in Diversity\u201d, UI conservation biology expert Prof. Jatna Supriatna, Ph.D. who presented the material \u201cIntroduction to Indonesia\u2019s Biodiversity & It\u2019s Challenges\u201d, and Director General of Nature Conservation of the Ministry of Environment Ir. Wiratno who presented the material \u201cMarine Conservation in Indonesia: Future Challenge\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Winter School program is an initiative aimed at strengthening the partnership between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, and the Faculty of Science, Leiden University, Netherlands. Through collaborative programs in the form of teaching and research that emphasize three main areas, including biological conservation and sustainability, it is hoped that the exchange of ideas and expertise between the two universities will be mutually beneficial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Typically, selected participants will visit Leiden University in the same year to undertake a follow-up program.
