The Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UI, held two Virtual Short Course (VSC) activities, namely "VSC on Environmental Chemistry” bekerjasama dengan Department of Chemistry Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) pada 3-9 Februari 2021, dan “VSC on Functional Material Chemistry” in collaboration with Hanyang University (South Korea) on February 23-26, 2021. Both activities are implementations of the Global Academic Program (GAP) and are part of the Global Academic Program (GAP) activities. Academic Reputation Development in the Department of Chemistry funded by DPASDP UI.
The Academic Reputation Development, chaired by Dr. Yuni Krisyuningsih Krisnandi, includes 4 flagship programs, namely 1) Visiting Professorship, 2) International Benchmarking, 3) Diaspora Scientist Invitation dan 4) Global Academic Program (information related to the program can be seen at: Academic Reputation Enhancement 2020-2021 – Kimia FMIPA UI).
Dr. Rahmat Wibowo as the Chief Executive of the Global Academic Program said that the VSC activities were designed in accordance with the Vision and Mission of the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA UI, which is part of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education which is focused on contributing to the development of science and technology at the national and international levels, especially in the fields of energy, health, and the environment.
The VSC involved 10 expert lecturers in related fields from the Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, 5 lecturers from Chulalongkorn University, and 5 lecturers from Hanyang University. The "VSC on Environmental Chemistry" program totaled 83 participants, including 18 students from Chulalongkorn University.
Meanwhile, the "VSC on Functional Material Chemistry" program has 243 participants, based on verification and selection of 552 applicants. VSC activity coordinator, Dita Arifa Nurani, M.Si, said that the enthusiasm of participants, especially from outside UI, was quite high, with 143 participants of the Hanyang-UI VSC registered to obtain credits. The students came from other universities in Indonesia such as ITS, ITB, UGM, UNJ, Yogyakarta State University, University of North Sumatra, General Soedirman University, Udayana University, and Malang State University.
Virtual short course implemented using two methods, namely synchronous class and asynchronous classStudents can attend lectures live and interact with lecturers and students from various universities through the Chemistry Department's Zoom platform and complete post-tests and assignments on UI's EMAS e-learning platform. The learning method uses a combination of interactive lectures and interactive video games. Question based learning which is carried out in groups through the "breakout room" feature. To obtain credit, VSC is designed to be equivalent to 1400 minutes of lectures (2 credit units) through lecture activities of 10 modules each, post-test implementation, and completion of assigned assignments. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at the University of Indonesia (UI) can strengthen international collaboration with universities in the Asian region in academic fields. Specifically, this program also supports the development of FMIPA UI chemistry graduates who are capable of designing solutions to urban problems, including those related to the environment, through the application of Material Chemistry and synthesis techniques, characterization of functional materials (nano materials) and their applications in several fields such as health, energy and the environment.
In addition, graduates are expected to have additional skills in the form of active involvement in communication (communication skills); solution to problem (problem solving); critical, analytical, and creative thinking (critical thinking, analytical thinking and creativity) to have strong international insight and experience.
The Acting Dean of FMIPA UI, Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng. expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the activity coordinators from each partner university, namely Prof. Warinthorn Chavasiri from Chulalongkorn University and Prof. Tae Hyun Yoon from Hanyang University, for the collaboration held through this VSC program.
He hopes that this activity can be implemented sustainably by becoming a model of distance learning (PJJ) lectures to support the implementation of the Independent Learning Campus (KMBKM) Curriculum, thereby encouraging students to continue their academic experiences, both in terms of further study and research abroad.
Furthermore, Dr. Rokhmat continued, in the future this program is expected to increase student and staff mobility as well as enhance cooperation between universities both at home and abroad through GAP activities.
