December 3, 2018

On Friday (November 30th), the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Indonesia (UI), in collaboration with the Network for Excellence in Training (NExT) Schlumberger, held the UI PetroChallenge, a competition for students and an educational platform to enhance their understanding of the oil and gas business.

The event ran until Saturday (December 1st) at the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Indonesia (UI) and PT. Pertamina (Persero) on the UI Campus in Depok.

A total of 44 participants, consisting of students from UI and other universities, participated in the competition. They competed for a total prize of 25 million Rupiah. NExT also offered the winners the opportunity to participate in a training program on the use of software commonly used in the oil and gas industry.

Also in attendance were Paula Kelly (PetroChallenge Instructor (NExT)) and M. Arief Dharmawan, PetroChallenge Project Manager (NExT).

Dr. Techn. Djoko Triyono officially opened the event. He believes this activity can strengthen the bonds between industry, academia, and future generations. He also stated that this competition represents FMIPA UI's effort to develop human resources in the field of geosciences exploration.

Participants are divided into teams of three or four people. They compete and collaborate to discover and develop hydrocarbons. Each team plays the role of an oil and gas company competing against other companies or teams. Participants also have the opportunity to use the upstream learning simulator, OilSim. OilSim is an online-based upstream business simulator and consists of six challenge stages.

Dr. Tito Latif Indra, the head of the committee, stated that leadership, communication, analysis, decision-making, strategy, negotiation, teamwork, marketing, and team management skills will be crucial in this competition.

"Each student team is expected to generate revenue while considering environmental, social, and corporate obligations," Tito said.

Regarding the assessment aspect, Tito explained that the winning team is selected based on the company that combines the highest profits and credibility points. These credibility points are awarded for effective decision-making, CSR activities, and actions that are environmentally sensitive.
