To Increase Social Awareness and Concern in Underdeveloped Areas, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, Helps Build Public Facilities in Sirnajaya Village

January 21, 2019

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Indonesia (UI), through the Social and Environmental Department of the Student Executive Board (BEM), implemented a community service program titled "MIPA Green Village" in neighborhood unit (RT) 02 of Sirnajaya Village, Sukamakmur District, Bogor Regency, West Java.

The program, which took place from January 14–20, 2019, focused on village development, constructing public sanitation facilities and renovating existing infrastructure deemed unsuitable for use.

Some of the activities included renovating the ablution area for the prayer room (Mushalla), constructing water channels and toilets (MCK), as well as various community development programs and learning programs for students of SDN 03 Sirnajaya, such as knowledge sharing, group Quran recitation, socialization, and public speaking training.

Dr. Retno Lesatari, Assistant Manager for Education and Student Affairs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, explained that the Mipa Green Village program was launched in 2018 but implemented in early 2019.

Retno continued, explaining that Sinarjaya Village was chosen for this program because of its remoteness and poor road access. The village boasts significant natural resources, but still requires significant assistance. Competent and well-educated human resources are essential for the village's development.

However, many children and adolescents in Sirnajaya Village drop out of school and do not pursue higher education. Most children and adolescents prefer to work rather than continue their education.

Furthermore, there are limited learning facilities and infrastructure, such as the lack of a public library or books. This leaves the community of Sirnajaya Village with limited knowledge, making it difficult for them to develop. For this reason, creating intelligent and moral human resources will be one of our foundations in the 2018 MIPA Green Village program.

Not only is there limited education, Sirnajaya Village also suffers from inadequate public facilities. These facilities include inadequate toilets, dirty public basins, and an ineffective irrigation system. This leaves the community in Sirnajaya Village without guaranteed health and a quality living environment.

MIPA Green Village is a village development program based on the third point of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), namely Community Service. This program is expected to increase the awareness and social awareness of the FMIPA UI community towards the surrounding environment, especially in underdeveloped villages. This will enable the fostered villages to transform into developing villages through the programs initiated by MIPA Green Village.
