Participants of the 2018 Winter School Program Conduct Observations on Seribu Island

Excursion studies conducted in The 2nd Winter School Program themed Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainability: Marine Chapter was held on Pramuka Island, Seribu Islands on January 16-24 2018.

In the series of events, the participants, who were a combination of students from FMIPA UI and Leiden University, carried out several activities. project observasi di bidang kelautan. Project consists of marine themes which will later be linked to the subject sustainability on the island. The themes consist of  The anthropogenic factors toward percentage coral coverageThe interaction between macroalgae and lifeform coral in Pramuka Island and Air Island, Seribu Island, Mangrove ecosystem service at Pramuka Island, Ornamental fish trading and its effect on sustainability (Panggang Island case study), Sea turtles conversation in Pulau Pramuka, Overexploration of edible species in intertidal zone.

The observations were a new experience for the participants, especially the Leiden University students who have diverse educational backgrounds, both social and scientific. They were also required to interact with Thousand Islands National Park officers based on Pramuka Island and local residents through interviews. Some topics even required participants to conduct interviews. snorkeling and learn specifically about coral reefs. This didn't deter the participants from working together and conducting thorough observations. Therefore, for each topic, the participants were accompanied by several lecturers, national park officers, and a Biology alumni from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), who are experts in marine sciences.

In addition to Pramuka Island, several other islands were also visited as observation data collection locations. For the coral reef and turtle topic, participants visited Air Island, while the group with the topic ornamental fish trading taking a case study on Panggang Island.

To complement the activities, participants also visited the Marine Protected Area located between three islands: Pramuka Island, Panggang Island, and Karya Island. They also visited the waters of Semak Daun Island, where all participants conducted their activities. Island Hoping and snorkeling after completing the observation.

The results of the participants' observations conducted over the week will be presented at the One Day Seminar on Marine Tropical Diversity and Sustainability on January 25, 2018 at the FMIPA UI campus.
