On Monday, 23 April 2018, the Student Executive Board (BEM) of FMIPA UI commemorated Earth Day, which falls on 22 April each year, by launching the #YUKPAKAITUMBLER campaign.
Through this initiative, the FMIPA UI Student Executive Board (BEM) encouraged the entire FMIPA UI academic community and the people of Indonesia to reduce the use of plastic bottles by using tumbler bottles. This is because tumbler bottles are portable, can be used anywhere and anytime, and are reusable.
The Chairman of the FMIPA UI Student Executive Board, Ahmad Fauzan Kamaluddin (Chemistry), explained that this plastic bottle reduction campaign aims to decrease plastic waste production and raise awareness among the FMIPA UI community about the growing concerns regarding plastic waste generated on Earth.
The #YUKPAKAITUMBLER campaign launched this year offers a benefit for participants: anyone who brings a tumbler can refill their drinking water for free, provided at Building B.
Still in the context of commemorating Earth Day, on 25 April 2018, the FMIPA UI Student Executive Board (BEM) received a visit from the BEM UI Department of Environment. The visit was part of a collaborative activity for the 10,000 Free Tumbler Bottles Movement, with a small booth set up in the Building B area of FMIPA UI. Visitors to the booth could exchange five plastic bottles for one tumbler bottle free of charge.
The 10,000 Free Tumbler Bottles Movement launched by BEM UI was not only held at FMIPA UI but also at several other faculties across UI. The activity, which ran from 25 April to 3 May 2018, was met with great enthusiasm by the FMIPA UI academic community, as evidenced by the long lines at the booth.
In addition to the plastic bottle reduction campaign, the 2018 FMIPA UI Student Executive Board (BEM) also provided educational content related to Earth Day on their LINE and Instagram accounts. This included information on the shape of the Earth, the evolution of the Earth, the evolution of continents, and the current state of the planet.
By providing this knowledge, the FMIPA UI Student Executive Board (BEM) hopes that FMIPA UI students, as well as the wider Indonesian community, can gain a deeper understanding of the Earth and actively contribute to reducing the amount of plastic waste and related environmental problems.
According to the public relations officer of BEM FMIPA UI, Shintia (Mathematics), as the Earth ages each year, the human population inhabiting it also increases. Therefore, the condition of the Earth should be given greater attention to ensure its suitability as a planet for living beings is maintained.
