The UI contingent consisting of two students from different faculties won 3rd place in the 12th National IDEA Competition (Intelligence in Disseminating & Encouraging Aspiration) Debate organized by EDS Polytechnic State Of Sriwijaya (POLSRI).
The two are Haiqa Sabrina Ramadhani (Geophysics 2021) and Bianca Fabiola Zafira Martawardaya (Chemical Engineering 2021).
The national-level English debate competition was held online on November 20-21, 2021, and involved 70 students from various universities in Indonesia.
The race scheme that Haiqa went through started from the stage preliminary which consists of 4 rounds. After that, the teams that qualify will proceed to the final stage eliminasi which has focused on two categories, namely, Novice and Open.
Each category then continues to the next round, namely the final round Octo Final, Quarter Final, Semi FinalIn each round, there will be 2 teams eliminated. Finally, in the final round Grand Final will be obtained Champion (Juara 1), Runner up-1 (Juara 2), Runner up-2 (Juara 3), dan Runner up-3 (Juara 4).
“The 2021 IDEA Competition began with the announcement of the motion and the shuffling of the ballots match-upOf the 36 teams, 4 teams will be pitted against each other in preliminary for score deliberation public-speaking. The motions presented in the competition were quite diverse, ranging from economics and politics to international relations and social issues. Throughout the debate, Haiqa maintained that in debate, we cannot bring our own beliefs; rather, a well-founded analysis is always more important. Haiqa also mentioned her involvement in one of the Student Activity Units (UKM) at the University of Indonesia, namely English Debating Society Society (EDS) UI really helped him to train his debating skills.
"In my opinion, the main tip for participating in a debate competition is to be confident and bold in presenting your arguments clearly. Furthermore, it's also important to conduct thorough analysis, such as providing an explanation of the mechanism. likelihood, and so on. Finally, we must also be able to defend our own team. For example, if we're challenged, we have to prove that our opinion is more realistic," Haiqa said of her tips.
the competition, there are three assessment components that are commonly used, namely 3M (method, manner, matter). Method assess the way the structure of the delivery (clarification, rebuttal, and argument). Manner assess language skills and attitudes during delivery. Meanwhile matter assess the content of the presentation and relevant examples or applications. In addition, there are also two types of assessment, namely speaker score speaker score (each speaker in the team according to 3M) and team case (the whole team's arguments are relevant and intuitive).
Speaking about challenges, Haiqa admitted that her relatively new debating experience presented a challenge. Nevertheless, she still viewed it as an opportunity to learn more.
“The challenge was when I was trained to be the second speaker at Asian Parliamentary Style. Competition requires the ability to be Asian Parliamentary Style. Competition requires the ability to be Opening Proposition/Opposition dan juga Closing Proposition/Opposition. I feel that my lack of experience as the third speaker made me somewhat lacking in every part. Closing. But, I am very fortunate to have team members who are cooperative and can build chemistry "Good, so that the debate can also run smoothly," said Haiqa, describing her challenges.
Despite the challenges, Haiqa also revealed that there were many benefits she gained from the competition. As a student, she believes that academic grades aren't the only way to develop oneself, but that there are many other positive activities to pursue, such as participating in competitions. Other benefits include broadening knowledge and training in various fields skill khususnya public speaking, critical thinking, expand relationships and much more.
Closing the discussion with the UI Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Public Relations Team, Haiqa emphasized the importance of motivation when pursuing dreams. She stated that motivation can come from various sources, both within oneself and from others. It's important to have role model so that we can continue to be inspired to achieve. In this way, he hopes that FMIPA students can play a greater role in their communities and encourage others to continue developing.
