Earth Friends Competition (KSB) 2020 Science Theory Category which was held thanks to collaboration PT Pertamina (Persero) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI), has now entered the National Selection round or semifinal round. A total of 68 participants from four fields of science, namely Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, took part in the national level selection, which took place on Tuesday (8/12). They managed to outperform 12,747 students in the preliminary round.
The National Selection Activity of KSB 2020 Science Theory Category was held online and directly from the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building of FMIPA UI-PT. Pertamina, UI Campus, Depok, and from 26 partner universities of KSB 2020 throughout Indonesia simultaneously today, at 08.00 WIB, while still implementing the COVID-19 health protocol. On the same day, at 16.30 WIB, PT. Pertamina Persero – FMIPA UI immediately announced the participants who successfully advanced to the final round.
In his speech, Dian Hapsari as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Manager of PT Pertamina (Persero) said, “The semifinalists have successfully eliminated more than 12,000 other participants from all over Indonesia in the provincial selection stage. This is an extraordinary achievement. We appreciate and are proud of all participants both at the provincial level and those who have successfully entered the semifinals because they have optimally utilized the opportunity and competition platform provided by PT. Pertamina.”
Acting Dean of FMIPA UI, Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M. Eng., said, "In this National Level Selection, the competence of participants towards the final round is more tested and the competition between participants is increasingly competitive, the challenges faced by the participants are also greater through solving analytical questions." He also said that for participants who have not passed to the final round, do not be discouraged because the opportunity to prove competence in the field of science is still wide open in other opportunities.
Chief Executive of KSB 2020 Science Theory Category, Prof. Dr. Yoki Yulizar, who is also a Professor of FMIPA UI, said, "The results of the preliminary round at the provincial level on November 11-12 have produced 10 finalists with the best scores in each region and 7 finalists with the best scores nationally. So that each field of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, has 17 finalists, with a total of 68 finalists participating in the semifinals."
Prof. Yoki continued, the series of activities for the Semifinal Round itself had begun by downloading and working on open-ended questions in the form of papers on December 1, 2020, uploading the results of the papers on December 6, 2020, working on essay questions offline and simultaneously at the KSB 2020 partner universities where the Provincial Selection participants came from, or at the KSB 2020 partner university closest to the participant's residence on December 8, 2020, until the final round exam on December 10, 2020 for the 8 finalists from each field who were declared to have passed.

After successfully holding the National Science Competition packaged under the name of the Pertamina National Science Olympiad (OSN) nine times in a row, Pertamina and FMIPA UI have collaborated again to hold KSB 2020. KSB 2020 is a scientific competition event that aims to facilitate the younger generation, especially Indonesian students, in exploring their thinking/logic in presenting innovation as a solution to solving problems not only in the scope of corporate and national needs, but also in the context of globalization, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, in November 2020, a provincial-level preliminary round was held using the Computer Based Test (CBT) system.
