Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) Teaches How to Breed Silkworms Using Waste in Sukarame Village, Pandeglang

The FMIPA UI Community Service Team led by Abinawanto along with eight students from the Department of Geography and Biology conducted a socialization of the development of silk worm and water flea farming using livestock waste named Tubifarm Uncal on Sunday, October 2, 2022 in Sukarame Village, Carita, Pandeglang, Banten.

In its implementation, the community service team collaborated with the Pandu Cendikia Foundation, four lecturers from the Department of Biology, FMIPA UI consisting of Retno Lestari, Ratna Yuniati, Dian Hendrayanti, and Windri Handayani, the UI Scout team with ten students, and with support from the Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment, University of Indonesia (DPPM UI).

Program implementation Tubifarm Uncal The event began with an outreach session on the use of catfish farm waste for cultivating silkworms and water fleas. The activity then continued with a hands-on experience of feeding the silkworms using coconut pulp.

Abinawanto, the head of the community service program, explained that fish farming is a key economic sector in Sukarame Village. However, the development of fish farming still faces challenges, one of which is feeding. "Initially, silkworms used for fish feed were only obtained wild, in rivers or waterways. Another obstacle is that silkworm farming for fish feed has not been widely practiced and is only used by individuals for their own fish consumption," Juhri added in a press release on Sunday (October 2).

In closing, Rika, the Head of Sukarame Village, expressed her gratitude to the University of Indonesia's community service team for their outreach to fish farmers about the Tubifarm Uncal program. Rika hopes the outreach will benefit the community and create new business opportunities in Sukarame Village.
