The condition of humid and wet atmospheric dynamics and high heating as well as strong local conditions, increase the occurrence of hydrometeorological disasters in several regions of Indonesia such as flash floods in Bandung and Aceh, landslides in Garut, and strong winds in South Kalimantan. In the next few days the potential for rain cloud growth in Sumatra and Java is relatively high. It is predicted that the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning, thunder and strong winds will continue to increase in the next week evenly throughout Indonesia. Against this background, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UI in collaboration with the Indonesian Association of Geophysicists (HAGI) held a Climate Change Seminar with the theme "Understanding Hydrometeorological Disasters in the Context of Anticipating Natural Disasters". This event was opened by Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng., as Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UI.
To gain a comprehensive understanding of hydrometeorological disasters, the material was presented by four experts in the fields of climate, weather, and disasters. The first material opened with a presentation on the topic: "The Impact of Climate Change on Sustainable Development," delivered by Prof. Jatna Supriatna (Climate Change Expert, Universitas Indonesia).. Continued with the second speaker with the theme: "Climate change: impacts, mitigation and adaptation" delivered by Dr. rer. nat. Armi Susandi (Climate Change Expert, ITB).. The third material with the theme: "Extreme Weather: Causes, Anticipation and Mitigation" was delivered by Dr. Yunus S. Swarinoto, Deputy for Meteorology at the Meteorology (BMKG).The final presentation, titled “Mitigation and Management of Natural Disasters,” was delivered by Dr. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Head of the Data, Information, and Public Relations Center at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB)..
The seminar was attended by students and lecturers from universities offering meteorology and earth science programs, as well as high school teachers from the Jabodetabek area specializing in disaster management or natural sciences. Practitioners, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations also participated, including the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Atmospheric Science Center of LAPAN, and Regional Disaster Management Agencies (BPBD). NGOs and non-governmental organizations such as the Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) and Maipark Insurance were also involved in the seminar.
